# Batteryboks vs The Battery: Which One Does Volt Rent?

Volt's SOUNDBOKS Gen4 Battery Rental and Battery Swap run on one specific battery: the one SOUNDBOKS itself calls **The Battery**, the USB-C model it launched in June 2024\. It is not the older **Batteryboks**. Both are still sold on soundboks.com, both fit more than one SOUNDBOKS speaker, and that overlap is exactly why the two get mixed up in search.

If you typed "Batteryboks" or "SOUNDBOKS Gen4 battery" and landed here still unsure which one you actually need, here is the short version, then the detail.

## Two SOUNDBOKS batteries, not one

SOUNDBOKS has sold two different battery products side by side. Neither replaced the other on the shelf, so both still show up when you search.

### Batteryboks

The older of the two. A 12.8V LiFePO4 battery built to run from -10°C to +40°C. [SOUNDBOKS's own product page](https://soundboks.com/products/batteryboks?ref=resources.getvolt.dk) states it plainly: *"The Batteryboks works with the Soundboks 2 - 4 and Go, but not any earlier generations."* It charges through SOUNDBOKS's standard charging cable, not USB-C. Playback runs about 40 hours at mid-volume, and 5 to 8 hours at full volume depending on which speaker it's powering.

### The Battery

The current one, and the one Volt's rental is built on. [Released June 2024](https://soundboks.com/products/the-battery?ref=resources.getvolt.dk), 12.8V at 7.8Ah (99.84Wh), and it charges through USB-C only, a minimum 10W charger to top up, 65W for a full recharge in 2 hours. The standout feature: it can keep playing while it charges, even at full volume, something the Batteryboks can't do. It also works as a USB-C powerbank in reverse, topping up your phone off the same cell. [SOUNDBOKS's own support article](https://soundboks.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb/articles/14450250758940-General-The-Battery-USB-C?ref=resources.getvolt.dk) states *"THE BATTERY is compatible with all existing Soundboks generations,"* and lists the same 40-hour mid-volume, 6 to 8-hour full-volume playback figures.

## So which one does Volt actually rent?

The Battery. Volt calls it the **SOUNDBOKS Gen4 Battery** inside its own rental and swap program, referring to it as SOUNDBOKS's fourth-generation battery, not a speaker generation. That naming is the whole source of the confusion, and it's worth saying plainly: Volt's "Gen4" and SOUNDBOKS's "The Battery" are the same physical product.

Two things run on it:

- **SOUNDBOKS Gen4 Battery Rental:** rent the battery itself for 200 DKK plus a 1,400 DKK refundable deposit. On Volt's own service page, it "pairs with SOUNDBOKS 2, 3, 4, Go and Mix." Don't return it, and the deposit converts into a purchase; return it at the same festival and the deposit comes back to the same card, typically within 14 business days.
- **SOUNDBOKS Battery Swap:** swap a drained Gen4 battery for a full one at a Volt Recharge Zone, as many times as your package allows, in packages of 4 or 7 swaps. This only works with the Gen4 battery. A Batteryboks, or anything from Soundboks Gen1 to Gen3, isn't eligible, whatever SOUNDBOKS's own marketing says about broad compatibility elsewhere.

## What if you only own a Batteryboks

You can still keep your SOUNDBOKS running all festival. Rent the Gen4 Battery Rental at a Volt Recharge Zone, which unlocks access to Battery Swap, and carry on swapping drained for full for the rest of the event. Your Batteryboks stays home, or stays as a backup; it just doesn't plug into Volt's swap system.

## Don't confuse this with Soundlock

Soundlock is a different product entirely. It locks the SOUNDBOKS speaker itself down in camp, a metal wire, a ground spike and a padlock, so nobody walks off with it while you're at the stage. It's a 450 kr refundable deposit, separate from anything to do with the battery, and it works with every SOUNDBOKS model regardless of which battery is inside. ## FAQ

### Does Battery Swap accept a Batteryboks?

No. Only the Gen4 battery, SOUNDBOKS's current USB-C model, is eligible for swap at a Volt Recharge Zone.

### I already own a Gen4 battery. Do I still need to rent one?

No. Bring it and go straight to Battery Swap, no rental needed.

### What happens if I don't return the rented Gen4 battery?

The 1,400 DKK deposit converts into a purchase. Return it at the same festival for a refund to the same card, typically within 14 business days.

### Does Soundlock use the same deposit as the battery?

No. Soundlock has its own 450 kr refundable deposit, separate from the Gen4 Battery Rental's 1,400 DKK.

### Will my old SOUNDBOKS speaker work with any of this?

The Batteryboks lists Soundboks 2 to 4 and Go, not the original Soundboks 1\. Volt's own Gen4 Battery Rental page lists Soundboks 2, 3, 4, Go and Mix. If you're running the very first SOUNDBOKS, check compatibility before you rely on either.

Sort your SOUNDBOKS setup before the gate opens: see current SOUNDBOKS Gen4 Battery Rental, Battery Swap and Soundlock details on [Volt's SOUNDBOKS page](https://resources.getvolt.dk/services/soundboks/).
