# Cashless Festivals Made Charging Part of the Payment System

Drop the cash tin and you have not removed a cost from your festival, you have moved a dependency. Once bars, food stalls and the gate stop taking coins and notes, the only thing standing between a festival goer and a working night out is whatever card, wristband or app balance is loaded onto a device with a battery. Charging stops being a kiosk in the corner and becomes part of the system you already built the cashless policy on.

That is the case worth making plainly to anyone signing off next season's site plan, before the charging line gets cut as a nice-to-have.

## Cashless does not always mean phone-only, and that honesty matters

Not every cashless festival runs its payments through a phone directly. Look at four Danish events and the differences are real.

[Jelling Musikfestival states plainly on its own site](https://jellingmusikfestival.dk/info/kontantfri?ref=resources.getvolt.dk) that it is "helt kontantfri": completely cash-free. Every bar and stall takes payment cards. MobilePay only works at the two dedicated top-up booths. The actual spending happens through a small chip built into a wristband, which costs 20 kr as a deposit and is refunded if it is handed back before you leave the festival.

[Wonderfestiwall runs the same idea under its own name](https://www.wonderfestiwall.dk/info?ref=resources.getvolt.dk): Kontantkort, a card topped up with a maximum of 2,000 kr per transaction at the info wagon. The festival's own site explains it does not support MobilePay at all, because of poor internet coverage on site.

[Tønder Festival is "kontantfri" too](https://tf.dk/praktiske-informationer?ref=resources.getvolt.dk). Payment happens by bank card or by the festival's own værdikort, a card you can load with cash at a dedicated exchange point if you did not bring one.

None of those four requires a phone at the point of sale. A wristband chip or a plastic card does the job.

## But the phone still carries almost everything else

Here is where the nuance stops being a reason to relax. Even at a festival where the wristband handles payment, the phone still carries the ticket QR code at the gate, the festival app or running order, the map, contact with whoever a festival goer arrived with, and increasingly the top-up interface itself, since most of these systems now let you load balance from your own phone rather than queuing at a booth. Take the phone out of the picture and the wristband alone does not get anyone through the day.

Some events skip the wristband layer entirely. At [Landstreff Fredriksten](https://resources.getvolt.dk/case-studies/landstreff-fredriksten-case-study/), a cashless outdoor event at a 17th-century fortress in Halden with no permanent power infrastructure across the grounds, the phone is the ticket in, the payment method, and the map, all at once. There is no separate card system standing behind it. When the phone dies at an event built this way, there is no fallback layer at all.

So the honest version of the argument is not "every festival goer's phone is now their wallet." It is narrower and still holds: the cash fallback is gone everywhere, and depending on which system a festival has chosen, the phone is either the payment method itself or the one thing that makes the payment method usable. Either way, a dead phone now sits closer to the transaction than it used to.

## What a dead battery actually costs a cashless site

Nobody in this market publishes a number for lost bar sales when a device dies mid-event. No spend-uplift figure, no dwell-time study, no verified percentage tied to charging access exists that Volt has found, and pretending otherwise would undercut the rest of this argument. What does exist is a sense of scale for how often devices go missing or die in the first place.

In July 2019, Central and West Zealand Police delivered a van-full of lost property from [Roskilde Festival](https://resources.getvolt.dk/articles/roskilde-getting-there/) to their station in the city: [around 200 mobile phones, along with jewellery, power banks and up to 50 bunches of keys](https://www.thelocal.dk/20190711/denmark-200-forgotten-phones-found-after-roskilde-festival/?ref=resources.getvolt.dk). That is one festival, one lost-property haul, and it says nothing about batteries specifically. But it is a real, sourced sense of how many devices go missing at a large festival even before anyone accounts for the ones that simply run flat in someone's pocket.

Scale matters here too. [Copenhell](https://resources.getvolt.dk/guides/copenhell-guide/) fills Refshaleøen with around 39,000 festival goers a day, and every one of those tickets is sold and scanned in advance. The festival's own entry policy also requires larger bags to go into Volt's Event Lockers rather than travel around the site all day, which is the same logic charging deserves: plan for where things go, rather than leaving it to whoever remembered to charge up that morning.

The honest conclusion is that nobody can quote you a precise cost of a dead phone at a cashless gate. What an organiser can do is treat the dependency as real, because the cash fallback that used to cover for it is the thing that was just removed on purpose.

## What this means for the site plan

Once payment runs through a device, whatever that device is, the charging plan is no longer a separate line from the payment plan. They are the same decision, made at two different booths.

That does not mean guessing at capacity.
