# Outdoor Event Lockers: Weather, Power and Connectivity

An Event Locker bank that lives outdoors has to solve four things the indoor version never meets: weather, ground, its own power supply and its own network connection. If you ask a supplier "are they weatherproof?" and get a yes, you have learned nothing. The useful questions are what protection rating the actual unit carries, where its power comes from, and what happens to the access codes when the site has no signal.

This is the organiser's version of that conversation, written from the hardware Volt actually puts in fields and from the published guidance that governs temporary electrical installations at events.

## What "outdoor" is supposed to mean

Weather protection for an electrical enclosure is not a marketing adjective. It is classified under [IEC 60529, "Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)"](https://webstore.iec.ch/en/publication/2452?ref=resources.getvolt.dk), which applies to electrical equipment with a rated voltage up to 72.5 kV. The standard is the reason a supplier can state a protection level rather than describe one.

So the question to put to a locker supplier is not "is it weatherproof", it is "what is the rating on the unit you will deliver, and does it cover the lock mechanism and the control electronics as well as the cabinet shell?" Those are three different parts of the same box and they do not automatically share a rating.

The UK's Health and Safety Executive states the underlying duty plainly in its [electrical safety guidance for events](https://www.hse.gov.uk/event-safety/electrical-safety.htm?ref=resources.getvolt.dk): "To prevent danger, construct or protect electrical equipment that could be exposed to rain or other adverse conditions with suitable and sufficient covers, enclosures or shelters." A locker bank with powered locks and a payment or code system sits squarely inside that sentence.

## The body has to survive the season, not the weekend

Volt's Cubic Locker is the self-contained outdoor unit: 74 numbered lockers across both faces plus four integrated powerbank dispenser bays, 210 x 160 x 210 cm, 700 kg, built from galvanised weather-resistant steel, placed by forklift, four units to a 20ft container.

Galvanising is the part that matters over a career rather than a weekend. The American Galvanizers Association reports that in most atmospheric environments, properly specified hot-dip galvanized steel ["can provide 70+ years of maintenance-free corrosion protection"](https://www.galvanizeit.org/hot-dip-galvanizing/how-long-does-hdg-last/in-the-atmosphere?ref=resources.getvolt.dk), with observed field corrosion rates that "rarely exceed 0.3 mils per year", drawn from long-term exposure programmes run by ASTM committees A05 and G01.

No festival needs 70 years. What a festival unit needs is to be trucked to a field, stand in rain for eight days, get pressure-washed, go back into storage possibly wet, and come out in March looking like something a festival goer will put a phone and a passport inside. That is the real test, and it is a corrosion test more than a rainfall test.

Not every Event Locker is that cube. At most festivals the standard lockers are roughly 30 x 30 x 50 cm, sited under cover, with no power outlet inside. Coverage is a siting decision made on your ground plan, which is why the placement conversation and the hardware conversation are the same conversation.

## A locker bank is an electrical installation

Powered locks, code delivery and live rental data all need a feed. The Cubic Locker takes 240V/10A CEE. The Volt Locker Container, the 296-locker unit, runs on a single 230V outlet. Flightcase modules of roughly 40 lockers each are what you add when a camp fills faster than expected.

Once you know the draw, the site rules take over. HSE guidance says to locate main electrical intakes and generator enclosures where they stay "accessible for normal operations or emergencies, but segregated from public areas of the venue", and to route cables "to minimise tripping hazards or potential mechanical damage". Where a cable crosses a route on a bridge or catenary, it advises a height "of not less than 5.8m" so vehicles can pass beneath. The same page points to BS 7909, the code of practice for temporary electrical systems for entertainment and related purposes, which is the document your electrical contractor will be working to.

## A field has no network, and the codes still have to arrive

This is the failure mode organisers underestimate. Event Lockers send a locker number and a personal access code by email and SMS shortly before the slot starts. The organiser gets live rental statistics off the same connection. If the unit is offline, the festival goer standing in front of it has no code and you have no numbers.

Ask any supplier what the unit does when connectivity drops mid-event. An honest answer describes a fallback, not a promise that it will not happen.

## Ground, weight and the logistics nobody budgets

700 kg per Cubic Locker is not a trolley job. Placement is a forklift movement, which means the route to the spot has to carry a forklift, in whatever state the ground is in on build day. Four units per 20ft container is the number that decides how many truck movements your locker plan costs, and it is worth knowing before you agree a locker count with a supplier rather than after.

The same logic applies to the teardown slot. Lockers come out when festival goers have collected their belongings, which is usually later than the rest of the site wants to start striking.

## Six questions worth asking before you sign

1. What is the ingress protection rating of the delivered unit, and does it cover the locks and control electronics?
2. What is the power requirement per unit, and is it a CEE connection or a standard outlet?
3. Does the unit hold its own connectivity, or does it depend on our venue network?
4. What happens to code delivery if connectivity drops during the event?
5. What does placement need: forklift, hardstanding, crane access, and what is the unit weight?
6. Who is physically on site during opening hours, and who carries the key when something jams?

## Outdoor at an event is not the same as outdoor year-round

The trade sells two different things under one heading. A year-round outdoor installation at a station, a gym or a park is specified for permanent exposure and a fixed power and network feed, and we cover that in [how permanent automated lockers work](https://resources.getvolt.dk/guides/permanent-lockers-how-automated-smart-lockers-work/).
