Why phone charging matters more than it used to
Smartphones are no longer optional kit at a festival. They carry tickets, handle cashless payments, run the event app, and are the first thing a festival goer reaches for in an emergency. Battery drain at outdoor events runs faster than people expect. A packed venue saturates mobile networks, forcing phones into continuous signal search, the single biggest hidden drain on battery life. A phone at 20% at 3pm can be dead before the headline act.

What running charging in-house actually involves
In-house charging sounds simple in planning. The operational reality is more complicated.
Hardware. You need to buy or lease charging stations or powerbanks, enough to serve your peak demand. For a 5,000-person festival, that means sizing for concurrent demand across multiple site zones, not just total headcount. A modest setup costs thousands before you factor in spare units for inevitable failures.
Staff. Someone has to manage the operation throughout the event: handing out powerbanks, tracking returns, chasing non-returns, dealing with cable compatibility issues, and handling device damage claims. At a busy festival, this is a full-time role across multiple stations.
Losses and write-offs. Powerbank non-returns are a real cost. Loss rates vary, but they are built into any honest budget. If you own the hardware, you absorb that loss directly.
Storage and logistics. After the event, the hardware has to go somewhere. Between events, it needs to be stored, maintained, and checked for battery degradation. This ongoing cost is invisible in the initial build decision but very visible on the balance sheet across a full year.
Day-of failure. Hardware fails. At a festival, it fails on the weekend with thousands of festival goers queuing. If the equipment is yours, the fix is also yours.

An event charging operator brings the hardware, the staff, the logistics, and the operational knowledge. You specify the capacity needed; they size, transport, and run the service from set-up to breakdown.
The revenue model shifts too. Rather than chasing a full margin while absorbing all costs and risk, you typically receive a share of revenue from the operator's service, or agree a flat fee arrangement. You do not need to own a single piece of equipment or train a single staff member on charging operations.
When a station breaks at 8pm on Saturday night, the operator's team handles it. When powerbanks go missing, that loss sits on the operator's books. When a festival goer has a complaint about the service, the operator's staff resolves it.

Is this realistic for a smaller festival?
