Getting to Smukfest 2026: train, bus, car and what to expect when you arrive

Skanderborg is one of the easier festival sites in Denmark to reach. Whether you are coming from Copenhagen, Aarhus, or anywhere in Jutland, the options are solid. What trips people up is not the journey itself but the last mile: getting from the station or car park to your campsite, and knowing which camp areas open when. This guide covers all of it.

By train from Copenhagen

Copenhagen Central Station to Skanderborg takes around two and a half hours on a direct DSB InterCity service, bookable at dsb.dk. Trains run roughly every hour through the day. The route is the main Jutland line, so there are plenty of departures even on busy travel days.

Arrive at Skanderborg Station and the shuttle takes care of the rest. You do not need to navigate onward yourself.

By train from Aarhus

From Aarhus, Skanderborg is about 20 minutes by train. Regional trains run frequently, and the journey is short enough that you can easily time it around your arrival day. If you are flying into Aarhus Airport, the city centre and then Skanderborg is a straightforward connection.

Shuttle buses from Skanderborg Station

Free shuttle buses run from Skanderborg Station directly to the festival site and camping areas. They operate from 31 July at 07:00 through 10 August at 14:00, twenty-four hours a day. Six routes cover the parking areas, camping zones, and main entrances.

Show your festival wristband on the bus. No separate ticket is needed for the shuttle.

If you want to travel the region freely, Midttrafik has a festival transit ticket for 99 kr that covers 16 hours of unlimited travel on all Midttrafik buses, night buses, the Light Rail, and Midtjyske Jernbaner across Central Jutland. Direct buses also run from Aarhus, Horsens, Silkeborg, Odder, and Galten. Check Smukfest's practical information page for the current route map before you travel.

By car from Jutland

Skanderborg sits just off the E45 motorway. The drive from Aarhus takes around 20 minutes, from Horsens about 15, from Vejle around 40. The route is easy. What takes time is the traffic flow into the festival site on peak arrival days, which tend to be July 31 and August 2.

Leave earlier than you think you need to. Parking opens at 07:00 on July 31.

Parking

Two free car parks serve the festival, both open from July 31 at 07:00 to August 10 at 13:00:

  • Festival P Vest at Horndrupvej 4B
  • Festival P Øst at Hylkevej 3

Follow the yellow "Festival-P" signs as you enter Skanderborg. Do not park in the town centre or on residential streets, which results in fines and adds to congestion on local roads.

Shuttle buses run from both car parks to the camping areas and festival entrances around the clock for the duration of the event. Drop-off zones near the entrance allow a three-minute stop for unloading before you move to the main parking area. Overnight parking in the car parks is permitted; trailers and car-camping are not.

Taxi pick-up points operate at Sølund (Vestergade) and at Horndrupvej opposite Festival P Vest.

When can you check in?

Wristband check-in opens on 31 July at three locations: the Sherwood entrance, KærligHeden Mark 2, and Waltherhalla. You will receive an email with your check-in letter before you travel. Bring valid ID.

Camping area opening times vary by zone, according to Smukfest's official practical information:

  • KærligHeden, NaturligHeden: 2 August at 14:00
  • Friheden (camper vans): 3 August
  • FØLA, Banerne, Sølund: 4 August

The best camping spots in the popular areas fill quickly after each zone opens. If getting a good pitch matters to you, aim to arrive on the first day a given area opens.

What to expect when you arrive

The festival site is Skanderborg Dyrehave, a beech forest in the hills above the lake. It is not flat. Plan for some walking between your camp and the stages, especially if you are in one of the outer camping zones.

The festival runs on a cashless chip system built into your wristband. Top it up via the Smukfest app before you travel, or at machines on site. Outside food and drink are not permitted inside the forest festival area.

Most of the camping zones have toilets and showers. Information stands are at each entrance. The main concert programme starts on August 5, though there is plenty going on from August 2 onwards.

Lockers and charging at Smukfest

Volt runs Event Lockers at Smukfest for the full week: approximately 30x30x50 cm, stored under cover, with an access code sent by email and SMS just before your slot opens. You can open and re-lock your locker as many times as you like during opening hours, at no extra charge per visit.

Charging is split by location. Staffed Volt booths with a swap service operate at KærligHeden, Sølund Indgang, and Stjernebaren. Self-service Volt Charging stations cover six camp areas: Holst, NaturligHeden, Skovlunden, Banerne and FØLA, Sølund Midt, and Skanderborghus.
