Getting to Samsø Festival 2026

The ferry is the part to plan first

Everything else on Samsø is easy once you are on the island. The ferry is the bottleneck, because a whole festival is crossing in the same few days. Book your car and passenger tickets as early as you can. From Jutland: Hou to Sælvig

If you are coming from Aarhus or anywhere in Jutland, take the ferry from Hou to Sælvig. The crossing runs about an hour, and Hou is roughly 35 minutes by bus from Aarhus. Book and check current times with the operator at tilsamsoe.dk.

From Zealand: Kalundborg to Ballen

Coming from Copenhagen or eastern Denmark, sail from Kalundborg to Ballen Ny Færgehavn. That crossing is closer to 1 hour 40 minutes, and Kalundborg is about 1.5 hours by train from Copenhagen. Book and confirm times with Samsølinjen. Ballen is also the harbor closest to the festival site.

From Aarhus: the fast ferry

There is also a fast ferry from the quay at Dokk1 in central Aarhus, landing at Sælvig. It is a quick option if you are in the city without a car. Check current departures on the operator page before you rely on it.

From the harbor to the festival

Once you land, you do not need to figure out local buses. A direct festival shuttle bus runs from Sælvig Havn to the Samsø Festival main entrance, timed to match ferry arrivals so you step off the boat and onto the bus with no transfers. On the Tuesday and Wednesday of festival week, shuttles run for all ferries arriving between roughly 10:30 and 18:00. Check the current shuttle plan at samsoebus.dk.

If you land at Ballen, you are already close to the site. A free summer bus also serves the island, the nearest regular stop is about 1 km from the main entrance, and taxis meet most ferry arrivals. Night buses run from the festival check-in point when you are heading back.

Car, or no car?

You can bring a car on the ferry, but a vehicle spot is exactly what sells out first during festival week, and it costs more than a foot passenger ticket. If you are camping light and using the shuttle, going without a car is often simpler and cheaper. If you are hauling a full camp setup for a crew, a car earns its place. Either way, book the crossing early.
