Smukfest packing list 2026: the complete week-long camping checklist

Smukfest is seven days in a forest and the biggest packing mistake is bringing too much. You carry everything from the car to your pitch, then live out of it for a week. This is the packing list that keeps the bag manageable: what you genuinely need, what you can leave at home, and what to sort before you go.

The festival runs 2–9 August 2026 in Skanderborg Dyrehave, a beech forest in central Jutland. Most camping areas open on 2 August at 14:00, with wristband check-in from 31 July at the Sherwood entrance, KærligHeden Mark 2, and Waltherhalla. The main programme starts on 5 August.

The golden rule: one bag you can carry alone

Smukfest's camping layout means a real walk from car to pitch, sometimes uphill and through the forest. If you can't carry it yourself, leave it. This single rule cuts your packing list in half and makes the week far easier.

What the official camping rules ban

Before you pack, know what Smukfest prohibits on site. These come directly from the official camping rules at smukfest.dk:

• Open flames of any kind: candles, bug lights, camp stoves, and grills are all banned
• Generators and vehicle batteries
• Pavilions and gazebos (a small tarp over your tent is fine)
• Large umbrellas over two metres
• Drones
• Draft beer systems
• Dry ice and pressurised gas bottles
• Motorised vehicles, shopping carts, and bicycles inside camping areas
• Upholstered furniture and household appliances
• Confetti cannons

Your handcart or trolley is allowed for getting gear from the car to the tent, but it has to fit inside your tent when not in use.

Tent and sleeping

Tent: Smukfest's camping rules cap tent size at 16 m² including stakes and guy-ropes. A two-person hiking tent in the 2–3 kg range is the sweet spot: small enough that you're not fighting for pitch space, big enough to store your bag inside and sit out a rain shower. Tents are packed close together in the forest, so a freestanding design saves arguments with stakes.

Sleeping bag: August nights in Skanderborg can drop to around 10–12°C once the music stops. A summer-rated sleeping bag (comfort around 10°C) is right. Don't bring a heavy winter bag.

Sleeping mat: Non-negotiable for a week on uneven forest ground. A foam roll mat is light and indestructible; an inflatable one packs smaller but needs checking for punctures before you travel.

Tarp: Allowed over your tent (individual coverage only, not connecting to neighbours). Worth it if rain is in the forecast. Smukfest's forest provides some natural cover, but not enough.

Clothing and footwear

Footwear: One pair of wellies and one pair of comfortable walking shoes or trainers. A week of Danish forest camping will produce at least two days of mud regardless of the weather.

Layers: Daytime can reach 25°C; midnight near the stages can feel like 14°C. Pack thin layers rather than thick ones. A light fleece and a packable rain jacket take up little space and cover every scenario.

Clothes: Plan for roughly three days of outfits you can mix and rotate. The campsite has laundry facilities at some camping areas, but most festival goers just manage with less. Dark colours show mud less. Avoid anything you'd be upset about ruining.

Rain gear: A decent festival poncho or waterproof jacket. Smukfest's forest paths become slippery in the wet, so lightweight waterproof trousers are worth the packing weight.

Extras: Warm socks you can switch daily, a hat for sun and one for cold evenings, and at least one pair of sandals for the tent area.

Food, drink, and everyday supplies

Personal food and drink are welcome in the camping areas but not permitted inside the concert venue. A small cooler with a closed dry-ice system is allowed; open dry ice is banned.

Cooler or insulated bag: A soft-sided cooler packs into nothing. Stock it from the supermarket in Skanderborg before you enter.

Reusable water bottle: Water points are spread across camping areas. A 1-litre bottle is the minimum; 1.5 litres is better for the hot days.

Snacks for the stage: You'll buy food inside the venue, but having something compact for long sets is sensible.

Bin bags: A few black bin bags fold flat. They hold wet clothes, line your tent entrance, and make sure you leave the pitch clean, which the festival rules require.

Charging and storage: sort it before you arrive

A week without a power outlet is the part most festival goers underestimate. Your phone handles ticketing, maps, payments, and keeping in touch with the people you've lost in the forest. Running out of battery means running out of all of those things.

Powerbank: Bring a high-capacity powerbank (20,000 mAh or above) for the first couple of days. There are no mains outlets in the camping areas.

Event Lockers: Volt's Event Lockers at Smukfest are 30 x 30 x 50 cm, stored under cover, and monitored daily. You get a personal access code sent by email and SMS before the festival, and you can open and re-lock throughout operating hours without extra cost. Use one for valuables, a change of clothes, or anything you don't want sitting in a tent all week.

Toiletries and health

Pack for a week but keep it compact. Shower blocks at Smukfest have queues in the mornings; timing it for mid-afternoon makes a significant difference.

• Toothbrush, toothpaste, and a small bar of soap
• Dry shampoo (a better use of space than a full bottle of shampoo)
• Deodorant
• Sunscreen (SPF 50; Denmark in August can catch festival goers off guard)
• Wet wipes (multi-use: face, hands, feet)
• Toilet paper in a small zip-lock bag
• Basic first-aid kit: blister plasters, ibuprofen, antihistamine, any prescription medication
• Earplugs for sleeping (the forest does not dampen sound as much as you'd expect)
• Small microfibre towel

What to leave at home

• A full-size suitcase: too heavy for the walk, no room on the pitch
• A massive speaker: portable speakers are allowed; a home sound system is banned
• Anything irreplaceable: the festival is muddy and crowded
• A grilling kit: open flames are not permitted on site
• A gazebo or marquee: the camping rules are clear
• Your bicycle: not permitted in camping areas
