Smukfest takes place in the forest between Skanderborg and Himmelbjerget. The location is a genuine beech forest, with stages and camp zones spread across hills and woodland paths rather than stacked into a single field.

The result is a site with distinct zones, each filling at its own pace. KærligHeden is the social centre of the campsite, open from the first day of the festival and the highest-traffic zone throughout the week. Skovlunden is a wooded camp with a direct path to the stages. NaturligHeden is quieter, connected to the main festival area by shuttle buses. Holst, Banerne and Føla, Sølund Midt, Skanderborghus and Sølund Indgang each have a different character and draw different types of festival goer.

Check-in opens from 31 July for early arrivals. The festival programme runs 2 to 9 August. That means the first tents go up several days before peak programme, and the site does not fully empty until the final day. Over the full period, managing storage and charging is less like running a weekend operation and more like running a short-stay venue.

Where the Event Lockers are

Volt places Event Lockers at three locations across the Smukfest site: the Sølund entrance, Skanderborghus, and Skovlunden. This is confirmed on the official Smukfest practical information page.

Each locker is around 30 x 30 x 50 cm, kept under cover, and monitored throughout the festival. Festival goers receive a personal access code by email and SMS just before their booking period starts. They can open and re-lock the locker as many times as they like during opening hours at no extra cost. There is no power outlet inside the locker itself, so festival goers who need device charging alongside storage use the separate Volt charging service.

The staggered-open model

The most operationally significant part of running Event Lockers at a week-long festival is matching locker access to when each zone actually fills. At Smukfest, Volt opens the Skovlunden locker bank from around 3 August, ahead of the full-site open, because festival goers in that zone begin arriving and settling in before the rest of the site reaches capacity. All-week locker bookings across the remaining locations open from around 5 August, when the full festival is in flow.

This is not a constraint. It is a deliberate match of supply to where demand actually sits at each stage of the week. Opening all banks on day one means empty lockers in zones that have not filled yet, while the zones that have filled see competition for limited capacity. Staggering the open dates puts lockers where people are, at the time they need them.

It also simplifies the booking experience for festival goers. An all-week booking does not require them to know which zone opens when. They book, receive their code, and it works from the date their zone opens.

Charging coverage, zone by zone

Alongside the lockers, Volt runs two types of charging service across the Smukfest site.

The staffed Volt Charging Service, where festival goers rent a Volt-Charger and swap it for a fresh one once a day, operates at three locations: KærligHeden, Sølund Indgang, and Stjernebaren. These are the zones with the highest foot traffic, where the volume makes a full staffed point worthwhile.

Volt Self-Service Charging stations cover six further zones: Holst, NaturligHeden, Skovlunden, Banerne and Føla, Sølund Midt, and Skanderborghus. These are unstaffed. Festival goers take a charger with built-in cables, use it, and return it. A refundable deposit applies at pickup.

The split between staffed and self-service is not a compromise on coverage. It reflects a practical read of where a staffed booth is justified and where a self-service station is a better fit. Every major zone on the Smukfest site has power coverage across the full eight days, and the overall staffing footprint stays proportionate to the volume in each location.

What multi-day organisers can draw from Smukfest

The problems Volt solves at Smukfest are not specific to that festival. They appear at any large camping event where festival goers arrive across multiple days, settle into separate zones, and stay for the full duration.

A single locker bank at a central point, which works fine for a compact two-day festival, becomes inadequate the moment you have tens of thousands of people spread across a large site with no single natural gathering point.
