The locker, in real terms

Picture a duffel bag stood on end, code-locked instead of zipped shut. It is under cover and monitored daily, and it opens with a personal access code sent to you by email and SMS shortly before your slot. You can open it and re-lock it as often as you like during opening hours at no extra cost, so it works as a base you return to through the day rather than a vault you seal once and forget. Two things it is not: powered (there is no outlet inside, so it charges nothing) and refrigerated (that is what Cool Lockers are for).

How the size compares

• Airline carry-on: the IATA reference figure above works out to around 63 litres, most people's mental benchmark for "a bag that fits everything." The Event Locker's 45 litres is smaller in volume but taller and narrower, so it swallows upright items, like a rolled rain jacket or a camera bag, that a carry-on would need to lie flat.
• Gym bag or weekend holdall: most 40 to 50 litre holdalls stand up inside with room to spare.
• Camping backpack: a 60 litre or larger trekking pack does not fit. That stays at the tent, not in the locker (more on why below).

What fits comfortably

• The valuables layer: passport or ID, cards, cash, house keys, spare charging cables, a powerbank.
• The weather layer: a rain jacket, a warm hoodie, a change of socks.

What does not fit

• A camping backpack of 60 litres or more, a tent, a sleeping bag, or a camping chair. Those stay at your tent; the locker is for the valuables you would otherwise carry all day.

Pack it in three zones

Festival goers who get the most out of a locker pack it in zones rather than as one pile. Back zone: things you touch once, the going-home kit, spare shoes. Middle zone: the daily rotation, layers, sunscreen, toiletries. Front zone: the grab-and-go items, powerbank, cards, camera, sitting on top so a locker visit takes thirty seconds.
