What Smukfest is actually like

Smukfest means "most beautiful festival" in Danish, and the setting earns it. The site sits in Skanderborg Dyrehave, a rolling beech forest on the edge of Skanderborg in central Denmark, roughly 20 minutes by train from Aarhus. Stages are tucked between the trees, and the paths between them feel more like a walk in the woods than a queue to the next tent.

The festival draws around 50,000 people each year, according to Aarhus Inside ↗, but the forest breaks it up so it never feels like a crush unless you're front-row on the main stage. The lineup leans toward pop and rock with a strong Danish presence alongside the international headliners: Robbie Williams, Lewis Capaldi, Tom Odell and MORTEN headline 2026, with Lukas Graham, D-A-D and The Minds of 99 among the acts across the week.

For 2026, Smukfest is adding a dedicated electronic music stage called EKKO, covering house, trance, dubstep and techno. The Moon Stage is also relocating to the Sherwood entrance, with a covered tent for 3,000 and open-air capacity for 10,000. There is a new central food market with seating, alongside 80+ restaurants and 65 bars spread across the site. Payment is cashless via a chip on your wristband (a "Walther account"). Outside drinks are not permitted in the forest area.

Volt at Smukfest 2026: Event Lockers and charging

Volt has been running Event Lockers and charging at Smukfest for several years. In 2026 the setup covers every major camp area, so you are never far from your stuff or a powerbank.

Event Lockers

Volt's Event Lockers at Smukfest are roughly 30 x 30 x 50 cm, stored under cover and monitored on site. You book in advance through the Smukfest shop and receive your personal code by email and SMS before the festival. The locker is yours for the full week, with unlimited access, no extra cost per visit. There is no padlock to lose.

Locker booking opens closer to the event via the official Smukfest shop. Check smukfest.dk ↗ for when booking opens. If you are deciding whether a day locker or a full-festival locker is right for your camp plan, our guide covers the trade-offs: Day locker or full-festival locker at Smukfest: how to choose.

Charging

Volt runs two kinds of charging at Smukfest:

  • Volt Charging Service: rent a Volt-Charger (powerbank) at a Volt counter. One swap per day for a fresh one is included, so your phone stays alive without you needing to think about it. Volt counters are at KærligHeden, Sølund Indgang and Stjernebaren.
  • Volt Self-Service Charging: freestanding stations with built-in cables across six camp areas: Holst, NaturligHeden, Skovlunden, Banerne/FØLA, Sølund Midt and Skanderborghus. Take a charger, bring it back when you're done.

For more on how the charging service works, see the Volt charging service page and the Smukfest 2026 dates, Event Lockers and charging overview.

Getting to Smukfest

The quickest route from Copenhagen is by train to Skanderborg, then one of the free shuttle buses to the festival grounds. Journey time from Copenhagen is around two and a half hours. From Aarhus it is about 20 minutes by train.

If you drive, two free car parks operate from 31 July:

  • Festival P Øst: Hylkevej 3, 8660 Skanderborg
  • Festival P Vest: Horndrupvej 4B, 8660 Skanderborg

No overnight parking, no campers, no trailers. Six free shuttle routes run 24 hours a day from 31 July through to 10 August at 14:00, connecting the car parks, camping areas and festival grounds. Walking from P Vest to KærligHeden via Horsensvej is not permitted for safety reasons.

Bikes can be parked at Sølund, opposite the main entrance. For bus routes from Aarhus, Horsens, Silkeborg and other nearby towns, see smukfest.dk/praktisk ↗.

Camping at Smukfest

Most camping areas open on 2 August at 14:00. Wristband check-in itself is available from 31 July at three locations: Sherwood, KærligHeden Mark 2 and Waltherhalla. Bring your check-in email (or print) and valid photo ID.

Smukfest has more than ten distinct camping areas. KærligHeden is the social heart of the site and the first place most festival goers head: it is the busiest and loudest. NaturligHeden is quieter, sitting in its own corner of the forest. Skovlunden is close to the festival grounds, with a wooded path leading straight to the stages. Holst runs a breakfast cafe and is a quieter option. Each area has its own feel and its own sound rules (some require music off by midnight, others ask for a volume reduction).

General camping is first-come, first-served. Smukfest also offers accommodation "boformer" ranging from basic to small cabins, bookable through smukfest.dk ↗. Most areas have shower facilities, or there are showers nearby that cost 30 DKK via your wristband.

There are 17,000 volunteers on site across the festival, which keeps things running smoothly even in the busier areas.

Camping rules and what you can bring

A few things to know before you pack. The full list is at smukfest.dk/campingregler ↗.
