Best Camping Festivals in Denmark in August 2026
Five real camping festivals are still ahead in Denmark this August: Smukfest, Tønder, Wonderfestiwall, GrimFest and Skarø, ranked by size with verified dates.
August is the peak of Denmark's camping festival season, and most of the big tent-and-campfire events land in the first three weeks. Five are real overnight events this year: Smukfest, Tønder Festival, Wonderfestiwall, GrimFest and Skarø Festival, from a beech forest to a Bornholm cliff top to an island you can only reach by ferry. Here they are ranked by size, with verified dates and what actually makes each one different in 2026.

1. Smukfest, 2 to 9 August
Denmark's biggest camping festival still ahead this year, and the longest run on this list: eight days of live music in the beech forest outside Skanderborg, with camp check-in already open from 31 July. On its own numbers, Smukfest sees 60,000 daily visitors, including 18,000 volunteers, and close to 30,000 people camp together for the week.
Volt runs the storage and charging here. Event Lockers come in an all-week version, so a passport, powerbank and rain layer live behind a code for the whole run instead of in a tent. Charging splits two ways: staffed Volt Charging Service booths and Volt Self-Service Charging stations spread across the camp areas. Full details, including which camp gets which service, are in Volt's Smukfest 2026 charging map. Booking for lockers and charging opens on getvolt.dk closer to the date; if it has not opened yet for your slot, sort it at the staffed booth on site instead.

2. Tønder Festival, 26 to 29 August
The season closer, down by the German border: four days of folk, roots, country and Americana. 2026 is running at a historic pace, per the festival's own press release: Friday sold out well ahead of schedule and Saturday is close behind. More than 3,000 volunteers run the event, with festival goers arriving from over 30 countries. The festival grounds hold up to 15,000 people.
Camping splits into nine named neighbourhoods plus two external areas, from the livelier Fuglekvarteret to the quieter PTI Marken, and the festival's own site describes 2026 camping as nearly sold out. Late-August nights on the Jutland coast run cold, so this is not the sleeping bag you packed for a July festival.

3. Wonderfestiwall, 13 to 16 August
On Bornholm, by the ruins of Hammershus: the site's local development plan caps capacity at 12,500 people, including artists and crew. The site opens at 10:00 on 12 August, with camping running at Campingpladsen and the Camping+ field through Sunday morning. If you don't already have a ticket, the official ticket page marks the full run sold out, with only a handful of single-day tickets left.
Everything travels by ferry to the island, so the packing question is the same one Bornholm always asks: pack light and know where the valuables sleep. Volt does not run lockers or charging at Wonderfestiwall, so bring your own solution or plan around what the festival itself provides.

4. GrimFest, 30 July to 1 August
Started in 2004 as a garden party of four friends on a farm, GrimFest has grown into three days of metal, goth and alternative music at Grimhøjgaard in Brabrand, about five kilometres west of Aarhus. Camping is a paid add-on, booked separately from the festival pass: 300 DKK per person, 600 DKK for a motorhome or caravan, with the campground open Thursday noon to Sunday noon. Capacity tops out at around 5,000 festival goers in a strong year, and 2026's tickets are already sold out.
Volt is not confirmed on site at GrimFest. For everything else, from getting there by bus 4A to what the camping passes cost, Volt's own GrimFest 2026 guide has the practical detail.
5. Skarø Festival, 29 July to 2 August
The smallest festival on this list, and deliberately so: only 1,500 full-access passes exist, and 2026's batch is nearly gone. Getting there is the first act, not an afterthought: a festival pass on Skarø, an island in the South Funen archipelago, comes bundled with the ferry crossing. Camping is free with a pass, split between the general Festival Camp and the quieter, family-oriented Family Camp 300 metres from the main stage; both open Tuesday 15:00 and close Sunday 13:00.
Volt does not run services at Skarø. It is the one entry here built to stay small on purpose, not to scale.
What to sort before any of these
The camping pieces are the same at every one of these five, whichever you're packing for:
- Somewhere for the valuables. A tent has no lock. At festivals where Volt runs Event Lockers, a code by email and SMS opens and re-locks the same locker all day.
- Power for the run. A phone that dies on day two takes your ticket, your payment card and your friends' plans with it. Where Volt runs charging, you swap a drained powerbank for a fresh one instead of hunting for an outlet.
- The camp kit itself. Volt keeps a running list of 9 things every festival camp needs.
- The rest of the season. See Volt's full guide to summer festivals in Denmark for what has already wrapped and what comes next.
